Trailers of the Week: September 9-13

Welcome to the first edition of Trailers of the Week, where we scour the internet and hand-pick the very best videos released over the course of — you guessed it — the past week. Sometimes it’ll be a big handful of trailers, and during down periods it might just be one or two. Game companies are unpredictable that way.

Now grab your favorite engineer’s cap and overalls, because it’s time to hop onto the hype train.

A Day With PlayStation

Sony hosted a press conference on Monday, well ahead of the Tokyo Game Show next week. There they showed off gameplay footage for a number of upcoming PS4 games and even revealed new Vita hardware, including the PS Vita TV. The above video showcases how all of that fancy hardware works in tandem, promising a seamless experience for hardcore PlayStation fans.

Valiant Hearts: The Great War Announcement Trailer

Ubisoft announced some of their upcoming digital titles, with the most fascinating — to me, at least — being Valiant Heart: The Great War. Built on the same UbiArt Framework engine that runs the stunning Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends, it tells the interconnected stories of five World War I soldiers. The common thread among them? An adorable looking pooch. We can’t wait for this to hit PS3 and PS4 sometime in 2014.

Child of Light Announcement Trailer

Ubisoft is putting that UbiArt Framework through its paces all of a sudden, as Child of Light was also announced as a title running the engine. Child of Light, though, is a fairy-tale JRPG tribute being realized by Far Cry 3 director Patrick Plourde where everything is spoken in rhyme. As you can see, it’s quite the looker. Like Valiant Hearts, we can expect to see it on PS3 and PS4 in 2014.

Lily Bergamo PlayStation 4 Announcement Trailer

During Sony’s pre-TGS conference, it was announced that the latest project from Suda 51 would be a PlayStation 4 exclusive. All we know is that it stars a female protagonist, it has a striking art style, and will likely be a super-weird action game of some sort. Suda suddenly finds himself with something to prove after Killer is Dead bombed both critically and commercially, so this next project will hopefully put Grasshopper Manufacture back on track.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag — Building a Next-Gen Open World

It was a pretty great week for Ubisoft on the trailer front, and we wrap up this post with the latest trailer for the latest entry in their perrenial Assassin’s Creed series. This time we get a look at the nuts & bolts that make the PS4 version a huge leap over what we’ll see on PS3. It’s pretty inside baseball, but we find it fascinating just the same. We can look forward to this version of the game the same week as the PS4 launch.
