'Firefly' Online Game Coming to iOS and Android in 2014

More than a decade after it went off the air, Joss Whedon’s cult classic TV series Firefly is getting its own online game. The Firefly Online Game was first revealed at last month’s Comic Con, and it's slated for a 2014 release.

The Firefly Online Game will allow users to pilot their own spaceship, gather a crew to explore the universe and compete with millions of other players around the world. Just like the heroes of the Firefly television show, players will encounter trouble whenever they visit other planets.

The original TV series, set in the future, can best be described as a quirky mix of western and space opera. It follows the exploits of spaceship captain Malcolm "Mel" Reynolds and his crew, who fought on the losing side of a war for control of Earth and various territories in space.

Despite its short run (11 episodes, from September to December 2002), the show featuring the crew of the spaceship "Serenity" has refused to die. Ever since it was cancelled, fans have begged the producers to bring it back. Fans’ persistence has resulted in a DVD, a series of comics, a role-playing game and even a movie based on the series.

The Firefly Online Game will initially launch for Android and iOS devices. If it does well, it may expand to other platforms.
